St Bernards church
HISTORY
The Church was built in 1962. The Parish is essentially the urban development between the hamlet of Newton and the village of Hamstead.
And when the Parish was created in 1962, Hamstead Colliery was still in production and its site was included in its boundary. When the
colliery closed in 1967 the mine was sealed and the site cleared. Residential and other development took place on the site.
The original building was opened in 1963, and there have been a number of developments since then, providing a small worship space, two halls , one with a stage, a licensed bar, two kitchens, and other meeting rooms and halls which are let out each day to various community groups. The worship space can be enlarged by opening the screens to the adjoining hall areas.
It is named after St. Bernard of Clairvaux. In 2000 there was a Parish pilgrimage to the site of the Abbey in Clairvaux France. The pilgrims brought back a stone from the ruined Abbey which serves as a reminder each week of the life of St. Bernard.
